So Long Cold, Hello Warmth
January flew by and we’re now in what always seems like the longest month of the year to me, February. This year; however, we’re south of Virginia for over half of the month. I’m hoping our later than usual annual trip to Florida will give us plenty of warmth and lots of sunshine; and somewhat warmer weather by the time we return home.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 20 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 15.9 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 1:01 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 60° in the basement, 24° (feels like 11°) and sunny outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
Walking: 3.06 miles
• Average pace: 17:10 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 108 feet
• Start time: 8:46 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 25° (feels like 11°) and sunny
• What I wore: fleece lined tights, l/s shirt, nylon shell, down coat, neck gaiter, knit hat, and heated gloves
Stretching: Peloton Adrian Williams 10-Minute Full Body Stretch
I’ve really gotten good at procrastinating and didn’t make it down to the basement to start my spin until the early afternoon. While riding, I decided to give walking outside a try and I’m glad I did! I ended up with a pleasant walk and got to try out my new fleece lined tights and Tracksmith wool base layer shirt which both kept me toasty warm!
Remember that I wasn’t feeling well last week? Well, at about noon on Sunday, a switch flipped and I suddenly started feeling 100% normal! Thankfully, whatever it was finally got out of my system.
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Pilates: Peloton Emma Lovewell 10-Minute Core Strength
Walking: 3.05 miles
• Average pace: 16:19 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 119 feet
• Start time: 7:48 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 17° (feels like 12°) and sunny
• What I wore: fleece lined tights, l/s shirt, nylon shell, down coat, knit hat, and heated gloves
The day before’s layers during my walk were perfect so I wore that again. Now that I’ve nailed my single digit (to low teens) walking attire, I have no excuses to not get outside as long at the street is clear.
Tuesday
Pilates: Peloton Emma Lovewell 5-Minute Core Strength
Walking: 3.07 miles
• Average pace: 16:14 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 122 feet
• Start time: 10:18 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 32° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: fleece lined tights, l/s shirt, down coat, knit hat, and heated gloves
Cycling: 8.04 miles (Peloton Denis Morton 30-Minute Rock Ride)
• Bike: Peloton Bike+
• Average speed: 15.3 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 1:41 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° in the basement, 36° (feels like 44°) and partly cloudy outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
Even though I only saw one client, I didn’t stop all day and was completely exhausted by the time I collapsed into bed. I was trying to front-load my week with workouts, knowing I’d be spending a lot of time in the car as we headed south to Florida. That Peloton ride was a great choice and almost did me in, and I loved every second of it!
Wednesday
Road trip day 1: Drive from home to Charlotte, North Carolina
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Stretching: Peloton Adrian Williams 10-Minute Upper Body Stretch
Up early, I worked out prior to seeing two clients virtually before we got on the road around 10:30 AM. Our first stop was to see Pablo and his humans as we leapfrogged our way to Florida, stopping to see family and friends along the way.
Thursday
Road trip day 2: Drive from Charlotte, North Carolina to Beaufort, South Carolina
Stretching: Peloton Adrian Williams 15-Minute Stretching for Longevity
Hiking: 4.01 miles
• Average pace: 19:05 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 16 feet
• Start time: 12:47 PM
• Location: Congaree National Park
• Weather: 39° (feels like 32°) and cloudy
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, down coat with hood, and gloves
As we headed south to Beaufort, we stopped at Congaree for a 4-mile hike and to check another national park off of our list. My nose was red and my fingers were freezing, but I was thrilled to be away from the extreme cold and snow back home.
Friday
Road trip day 3: Drive from Beaufort, South Carolina through Georgia to Tampa, Florida
Pilates: Peloton Emma Lovewell 10-Minute Core Strength
We got a late start after visiting with our friend who recently lost his wife right after moving to Beaufort. Even though he has a great gym in his garage (and I used to train both him and his wife), we opted to spend quality time with him rather than working out. Once we finally checked into our hotel, we had a quick dinner and collapsed into bed (I did take time to do a core strength class first, though).
Saturday
Road trip day 4: Drive from Tampa to Naples, Florida
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Pilates: Peloton Emma Lovewell 10-Minute Core Strength
We got up early and hit the hotel gym for a great workout before getting back on the road for Naples. We arrived in Naples too late to ride bikes with our friend Betsy, but hopefully there’ll be a ride or two with her before we leave for West Palm Beach. We attended 3:30 PM mass (I wish we had a 3:30 Saturday mass at home) and then chilled with our friends for the evening.

Nicely done this week! Was frigid here too – mostly negatives or single digits. I dont have any trips planned but maybe I need one- someplace warn?!
I bet it was much colder up your way!
I’m jealous of your escape to warmer climes! I’m going to California in March to see my sister–I cannot wait! We’re supposed to thaw this week. We’ll see. Of course, that means mud on the trails, lol.
Enjoy your time away!
Thanks, we’re having a blast! You always have such a nice time on the California trails with your sister!
Leaving that kind of cold behind and chasing sunshine sounds SO good, Debbie!! Great job on keeping the routine going despite travelling so far.
Stopping at Congaree to sneak in a hike and tick off another national park was such a smart move too. Road trip fitness at its best!
Florida warmth and bike rides ahead sound like the perfect reward!
Thanks, Catrina! Stopping to explore Congaree was the perfect thing to do to break up a long car ride.
Well you sure picked a good weekend to escape our weather! It is jut brutal out there. Not a fan. Enjoy your warmer temps for a few days
Thanks, Deborah!
can’t wait to join you and post a picture not wearing a zillion layers. It gets colder everyday here.
My favorite workout was none – I froze during each one no matter how warm I dressed.
Just a couple of days and counting until you’re enjoying the Florida warmth, too!
How nice for you to get away for the snow, and for a few weeks as well! Enjoy! We had planned to go to Italy in June for our 20th anniversary but not sure that can happen now when we have Elsa, she’ll still be very young then, but we’ll see. I’m happy to do some local travels instead, there’s still so much in Ireland we haven’t seen.
Whatever you decide to do for your 20th anniversary this summer I’m sure will be fun! Congrats!
I’m very glad you came to Florida now and not last week! I feel so bad for anyone who was visiting last week- it was not typical Florida weather. You should get some nice warm, sunny days.
I hope we can get together! It would be fun if the logistics work out that we can see Darlene as well. It will be a blogger party!
Fingers cross that we can make the meetup with all three of us work!
Enjoy your time in Florida! I’m jealous, though our weather has been pretty mild (and warm) in comparison to almost everywhere else. I think my favorite workout was all the dancing at the hairball concert last night I had almost 8K more “steps” added to my count after I arrived at the concert, LOL.
It sounds like you had a blast at the Hairball concert!
I love how you squeezed in some workouts on your trip and were able to see so many friends—and another park!
This was definitely a good time to escape to Florida!
It’s been great so far and we still have a bunch of friends to see!
Yay on checking off another National Park! That’s a park I don’t know anything about. We went to Arches this past week and I was happy that I remembered to bring along my NP pass!
I do have a trip, or two (ok, maybe 3!) coming up in the next few months. Did I mention that I’m going skiing in Switzerland in March?? I can’t wait!
Have fun in Florida!
Did you by chance have snow in Arches while you were there? I would love to see that sometime!
Skiing in Switzerland? How cool!
Oh, my! So many adventures, and you know we love a Pablo sighting!
It’s finally warming up a little, although there was ice on my windshield yesterday morning. We’ll see how long it sticks around.
I’ve got a few Orlando trips and a North Carolina trip coming up in the next few months. Of course, I”m totally living out of a suitcase right now because of work, so that’s kind of sort of like vacation, maybe. we’ll see once A heads off on his post-graduation adventures where our paths might lead!
Ice on your windshield? Wow! It’s warmed up a lot since last week for you, right? It’s delightful in the Miami area!
What area of North Carolina are you visiting?
