Join me by pulling up a chair and pouring yourself a cup of coffee. I’m splurging this month and enjoying a hot chocolate with a huge dollop of whipped cream on top. Let’s take a break and try to talk about more than just fitness-related topics. Sound like a plan? I’ll kick us off…
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
January was a success in the fitness department, despite being snowed in for the final week, and a huge shoutout goes to my new Peloton Bike+ and the All-Access membership for aiding in that success! While my total mileage might look modest compared to my 2025 monthly averages, those 30-minute, shorter distance high-intensity intervals on the Peloton left my legs feeling like lead by the time I climbed out of the basement. Speaking of cycling mileage, I managed to clock 59 of my 200 miles outdoors before the snow hit and that had a big impact on my standings in the Winter Warrior Challenge.
Also worth noting, I’m surprised by how much I’m enjoying the core and stretching classes—they’ve become a fantastic supplement to my regular strength training and cardio routines.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
I finally managed to please the Garmin gods and was quite happy when this popped up on my watch. For a 68-year-old, I’ll gladly take a fitness age of 59! Considering Garmin’s usual cantankerous demeanor, I’m shocked it decided to send some good vibes my way for once.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
Earlier today, we continued our trek south after an overnight visit with Pablo and his humans. They were just hit with 11 inches of snow during Saturday’s bomb cyclone; Pablo clearly had a blast playing in it, though I think he loved seeing us even more!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
We added another little green tree to our national parks wooden map after visiting Congaree National Park in South Carolina this morning. Known for its oppressive heat, relentless mosquitoes, and trail-spanning spider webs, we decided it was best to visit in the dead of winter. Even though I was sporting a cold red nose and freezing fingers, it was still the perfect way to experience the park’s winter beauty without the notorious foul odors and the bugs!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
The hot chocolate mug in the first photo has the most adorable snow globe lid with a single red cardinal inside. It was a Christmas gift from a client, but as soon as my husband saw it, he claimed it as his own! That’s alright, though—I rarely drink hot beverages, so I’m sure he’ll share on the rare occasion I do.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
The Winter Warrior Challenge I created for our Dawn Patrol cycling group has been such a hit that I’m already planning a spring edition. This challenge was the exact push I needed; it got me outside on my bike for four days when I otherwise would have stayed in the basement.
- Questions:
- • My Garmin gave me some rare ‘good vibes’ with that fitness age, but we all know the numbers don’t tell the whole story. What is one fitness win—big or small—that you’re celebrating from January?
- • The Winter Warrior Challenge definitely pushed me out of the basement and into the cold more than I expected! Do you find you’re more motivated to exercise when you’re part of a team challenge, or do you prefer flying solo? ~ In this case, yes!
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.

That mug is beautiful! And it has a snow globe top?! Ha, I can see why your husband confiscated it as his!
Nice job on getting on the good side of Garmin, Debbie! Those high-intensity intervals are definitely paying off.
My Garmin age is currently at 49 (I’m 58). But the way my relationship is going with Garmin, that age will get higher very quickly!
Isn’t it a cute mug? I don’t know why I didn’t think to set the snow globe top beside it for the photo. Oh well…
Even though Garmin has been pretty rude to you lately, at least it appreciates your fitness level with a generous fitness age. Watch out, though, or it might dock you just for spite! 😉
Yay for your fitness age! I feel like my Garmin is pretty cantankerous too (e.g. recommending 72 hours to recover when I didn’t even do anything that strenuous :'( ). I almost made it to 300k steps last month and overall stayed really active, so I was happy about that! :]
I’d love to get to go to Congaree National Park someday! Visiting in the winter does seem like the better way to go!
Yeah, Garmin has some cool features like calculating your fitness age, but it sure can be rude with the constant “unproductive” comments after workouts.
Congaree is a beautiful park in its own odd way. As much as I enjoyed being above the muddy swamp on the boardwalk, it did get a little old with such repetitive views.
I am envious, majorly, of all your outdoor biking! That reminds me, there’s a “freeze your a$$ off” ride happening soon… I need to check the date. It’s on the trail by my house, so I have no excuse…
The key to riding outside in the winter is dressing properly. That’s why I decided I don’t care how I look and have been wearing my down coat on some of my rides. The wind, though, is a whole other story and would be a deal breaker. I’ll be curious to see if you participate in that ride!
That mug is really pretty and that photo is lovely!
Peloton strength definitely got me hooked on core classes. It’s like my body craves it now.
Garmin is so fickle! But I’m sure your fitness age is young with all you do.
Thanks, Coco!
Yes, I’m loving the core classes and that I can do them while on travel using the Peloton app.
I knew you would love all of the core and stretches on Peloton! I always feel better at the end of January having gotten back on track after the holidays and traveling. That mug is so pretty!
You were correct! And I completely agree about feeling so much better after getting back on track after the holidays.
That mug is so super cute! I’m glad your hubby is making good use of it. Congrats on a very lovely comment from Garmin. Those are not easy to come by so yay!
I’m jealous of all your snow. We have some but I prefer a good dump. Glad Pablo is enjoying!
Yes, my Garmin notification was extra special because Garmin is usually so stingy with its compliments. LOL
I do like a good snowfall once in a while, but this particular one was awful! We got sleet on top of snow and then we had many days of sub-freezing weather so nothing melted. If you didn’t shovel it immediately, it was impossible and the local weathermen were referring to it as snowcrete. HaHa!
It’s nice to get some good news from Garmin!
I would say winter is a good time to visit South Carolina. But how cold was it??? We’re still contemplating a move up to the Carolinas (eventually) but I’m getting a little worried that winter will be too intense for me!
Pablo in the snow… that’s so cute!
It was COLD in South Carolina, the temperature was 39° (feels like 32°) while we were hiking. Brrr! When considering where you might move, you should keep in mind that this was an unusual drop in temperature for the area (as you know from how cold it got where you live).
My son and d-i-l sent videos of Pablo playing in the snow. He was so cute!
Nice to hear something encouraging from your Garmin 😉
Great job with your fitness challenge! I really need something to push me out of my home gym – it’s just been so frigid!
Thanks, Michelle! What a cold winter we’re having – I definitely wouldn’t have gotten out of my basement if it hadn’t been for the challenge.
Snow Pablo is my favorite Pablo! What a cutie!
You had a great month! No one ever pleases the Garmin gods!
Right? Garmin is not happy with my vacation lifestyle either!
Congrats on a great month! Peloton has so many great classes, there’s always something new to enjoy.
With the winter we’re having, I’m proud that I’ve been pretty consistent with my running, even though conditions haven’t been ideal.
I don’t think my Garmin is advanced enough to tell me my age but I honestly think it’ll think that I’m older than I am, haha!
Thanks, Janelle! And good job on remaining consistent with your running during the nasty weather you’ve been having up there. LOL on what you think about your Garmin age. I doubt that’s true!
