Keeping it Inside
Even though I saw a couple of clients on Labor Day, my whole week was thrown off and I never knew what day of the week it was. I took advantage of the beautiful weather for a couple of walks outside, but I’m still stuck inside on my spin bike until my two wounds from recent minor skin cancer procedures heal. I miss riding outside, but I’m very grateful for an indoor option.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 35 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 15.7 MPH

• Weather: 68° in the basement, 75° and sunny outside

After sitting in the car much of the afternoon on our drive home from our niece’s wedding, I couldn’t wait to get on my spin bike. While spinning away I watched the second half of the Hokies football game, only to see them lose. It’s tough being a Virginia Tech football fan, but now that we no longer have season tickets I don’t feel like I have as much skin in the game. LOL
Monday
Strength training: 30 minutes of core and lower body
Cycling: 10.5 miles / 51 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.9 MPH / 16.1 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:26 AM / 9:08 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 66° in the basement, 57° and sunny outside / 66° in the basement, 62° and sunny outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
After lifting I had time to get on my indoor bike for a few miles before my first client arrived – I had a much lighter day because of the Labor Day holiday. After the first client left I got back on the bike for another ride before my next client arrived and ended up riding much longer than planned. Once again, my goal was to front load my week due to upcoming doctor’s appointments.
Tuesday
Walking: 3.08 miles
• Average pace: 17:33 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 36 feet
• Start time: 1:02 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 75° and partly cloudy with low humidity, climbing to 77°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
I had a 7:30 AM appointment with my dermatologist to remove the sutures from last week’s surgery and remove yet another basal cell carcinoma, this time from my right upper arm. I couldn’t resist the perfect weather and took a very easy-paced walk, mindful to keep my heart rate down – I wasn’t supposed to get my heart rate elevated for 24-hours post surgery.
Wednesday

Cycling: 18 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.3 MPH
• Surface: N/A

• Start time: 8:18 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 58° and partly cloudy, climbing to 64° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
With a busy day of clients and classes ahead of me, I stayed on task and finished my planned workouts, even multitasking on my spin bike while training an early morning virtual client (a client cancelation helped me fit in my walk).

• Start time: 6:01 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle

With another super busy day on tap (including two doctor’s appointments – both physicals), I was grateful to meet up with Kim and pound out my walk early during our weekly virtual cardio workout.

• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 5:50 AM

• Weather: 68° in the basement; 61° and mostly clear outside

Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
When I woke up at 4:33 and couldn’t go back to sleep, I got up and lifted, then fit in an unplanned spin while virtually training a client. Later I taught my weekly balance and stretching class and wrapped up the day with a ton of errands.

I was doing some chores and got a much later start than usual for my indoor bike ride. Hopefully, my arm will be healed enough by next weekend and I can ride outside again. I’d hoped to be able to walk to Saturday evening mass, but rain moved in so I drove and missed my opportunity for a forth walk for the week.
Questions:
- • How was your weather this week? ~ Our weather was delightful until the heat and humidity moved back in on Friday and Saturday.
- • Are you able to multitask with work, maybe with a treadmill desk or something similar? ~ Occasionally when I have my clients do lunges or squats I’ll do some with them, and as I’ve mentioned, I sometimes ride on my spin bike while training virtual clients.
- • Which workout did you enjoy most this past week? ~ I especially enjoyed my virtual walk with Kim (who was on her stationary bike) because I didn’t expect to fit it in with an early morning doctor’s appointment.
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Wow, Debbie, you really kept busy indoors! It’s great that you could juggle spin sessions, walks, and strength training around doctor appointments and client visits. I know it’s not the same as riding outside, though. I hope your arms heal quickly so you can get back to outdoor rides soon!
Thanks, Catrina! I’m looking forward to getting back outside on my bike soon!
I love to multitask when I can! Most of my work is focused on writing, which is hard to do on my treadmill. But if I have to watch A continuing education course or proofread something, sometimes I’ll be able to walk at the same time and I love it! Our weather was up and down this week. Had some warm afternoon, but chilly mornings.
That makes sense not being able to write while using your treadmill desk. It’s great that you can do other things though.
Well- thank goodness for indoor options! WHY can’t you ride outside with stitches in your arm!? I would push back on that, (and that’s why doctors hate me, lol.) Anyway- sounds like you had a great week of strength and cardio. Hope everything is healed up this coming week so you can get outside again!
Oh, to answer your question- I do multi-task at work in a way. I get into a lot of squat and lunge positions while I’m giving massages- I’m pretty active with my lower body. It’s mostly to save my back, but I do get a mini-workout.
When riding outside there’s lots of standing when climbing hills and I really do ask a lot of my arms. I’m not willing to pop a stitch and am totally fine with staying inside on my spin bike until my wounds heal completely. I’ll start out with flatter rides first before I take it back to my beloved hilly gravel roads.
Oh yes, I hear you on getting into those squat/lunge positions to save your back.
I can relate tot eh indoor biking a. Being outdoors. All of my biking miles were via my spinner last week…I am grateful to have that as an option, but I miss being outside! Hoping I still have some decent outdoor riding remaining before the temps get too chilly…
Yes, I’m always grateful for an indoor option. Here’s hoping we have a lot of beautiful fall days left that are perfect for outdoor cycling.
I don’t multitask but I do have a standing desk at work. I never thought I’d like one but I really enjoy it. And, I most enjoyed my long run this week. Not complaints that it was 20 miles, which makes me very thankful that I am feeling healthy enough to say that! 🙂 Very cool that you are able to multitask while you work!!
It sounds like your long run when great! And yes, I’m pretty lucky that I can multitask with a couple of my virtual clients.
I am enjoying our cooler mornings as well. The heat and humidity were rough this summer. You are good at multitasking!
I am loving these cooler mornings, too!
How lucky you are to have a full gym at home to keep active when you can’t ride outdoors. Hope you can get back on the outdoor bike soon again though. The weather is cooling down here but it’s still very nice. My best workout experience this week was by far my heavy chest press and it doesn’t matter if that’s what triggered my shoulder issue, it was still fabulous!
Oh no, I hope your shoulder issue isn’t going to be a big deal.
And yes, I love that we have a full gym in our basement (which gets used a lot both with my clients and my husband and me).
Great week!
We had a little bit cooler-ish weather, but it turned right around again on us. Yuck.
I had a fun 5K on Monday… it was good to get out there and try racing again.
I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed your race on Labor Day, Jenn. It’s always great to get back out there!
