Join me by pulling up a chair and pouring yourself a cup of coffee. As always, though, I’m sticking to water since I don’t care for coffee or tea. Let’s take a break and try to talk about more than just fitness-related topics. Sound like a plan? I’ll kick us off…
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
May turned out to be a great month overall. Even though a multi-day trip to the farm forced a few down days into my schedule, my cycling miles skyrocketed toward the end of the month. I made the decision to go all in for the Great American Ride to support my Dawn Patrol teammates. We’ve been pushing hard, and as of Thursday evening with only 24 hours remaining, we’re trailing the first-place team by a mere 37 miles.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
A couple of my blog readers have asked how I decide between my two spin bikes for indoor rides. Honestly, both my Life Fitness bike and the Peloton Bike+ offer an incredibly smooth ride, perform beautifully, are very comfortable, and both leave me a sweaty mess.
However, they serve very different purposes in my routine. Here is how I choose:
Why I Choose the Life Fitness Bike:
- • The Ultimate Multitasking Station – The handlebars provide the perfect, stable base for my laptop, making it my go-to choice when I need to train a virtual client via FaceTime.
- • Blogging on the Fly – For that same reason, it’s my preferred bike when I’m catching up on blogging—whether I’m reading and commenting on other posts or drafting my own.
- • Mindless ‘Hop-On-and-Go’ Rides – When I don’t want to think about a structured class and just want to log steady miles, this bike is the perfect option.
- • Scheduling Synergy – It’s my default choice whenever my husband is using the Peloton, which is his indoor bike of choice.
Why I Choose the Peloton Bike+:
- • Focused, Dynamic Workouts – Peloton rides require real focus, ranging from recovery to high-intensity efforts with constant resistance and cadence changes. Because they require my full attention, they don’t pair well with multitasking.
- • A Different Setup – The Peloton handlebars don’t accommodate my laptop, so if I do need to FaceTime, I have to rely on my phone.
- • Preset Time Limits – Because Peloton classes have set durations, if I am aiming for a longer endurance ride, I have to stack multiple workouts together to reach my mileage goals.
In summary, if I need to work, blog, or train a client, the Life Fitness bike wins every time. If I want a focused, structured workout to push my limits, I clip into the Peloton!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
I use WordPress to host my site, and I’ve always liked adding a clean bit of spacing right after a picture. Lately, though, simply hitting return twice isn’t working anymore. Instead, I’m having to go into the HTML and rewrite the code just to get the layout I want. It is so annoying! Any other WordPress users out there dealing with similar formatting glitches?
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
In case you missed it a couple of weeks ago on my Weekly RunDown, my brother and I officially sold the family farm. Getting the property market-ready was a massive undertaking that required countless trips to Southwest Virginia over the last two years. However, we are absolutely thrilled that, in the end, a family member purchased it. I know my parents would be so pleased!
By the way, the top picture with the water bottle was taken at the farm, but the field you see just beyond the fence no longer belonged to us—my parents actually sold the majority of the surrounding land when they retired.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
While our son and daughter-in-law were away hiking the Scottish Highlands, they sent us some incredible pictures of Highland cows. My absolute favorite was this shot of a mama and her little calf. They are so incredibly cute that, for a split second, I caught myself thinking, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have sold the farm… maybe I should have moved there to raise Highland cattle!’ Just kidding, of course—having grown up on a farm, I know exactly how much hard work that actually takes!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
Speaking of Highland cows, look what our son and daughter-in-law brought home for us! These adorable Walker’s shortbread cookies shaped like Highland cattle were just too cute. Needless to say, they were absolutely delicious—and they didn’t last long at all!
- Questions:
- • Do you prefer a mindless, hop-on-and-go workout or a structured, high-intensity class? ~ both
- • What’s the most unique or unexpected animal you’ve seen on a trip? ~ While we fully expected to see grizzly bears in Glacier National Park last summer, it was still a shock when three of them came bounding out of the woods toward us just as we neared the visitor center after a long hike on a pretty secluded trail.
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.

And now you’re only 37 miles behind the first-place team!! Let’s hope they’re not secretly holding back a pile of miles to dump onto the leader board at the last minute!
I am way too invested in this challenge. At this point, I feel as if I’m part of Dawn Patrol myself!
And those shortbread cow cookies are the best! Shortbread is my absolute favourite biscuit, and your son finding cow-shaped ones for you is the icing on the cake… or rather, the butter on the shortbread!
We woke up to an 89 mile difference between Dawn Patrol and the first place team. I’m doing 50 miles this morning on the spin bike and my husband is out with a teammate, both planning to ride 50 miles this morning. I suspect, though, that the other team is doing the same and will be riding hard until the end. And you’re correct, there’s always the chance that people are holding onto miles and won’t be logging them until late tonight.
Fortunately, the whole family was here or I might have been tempted to eat all of the shortbread cookies myself. 😉
I do both types of rides on my Peloton. Sometimes I pop on a class but then do my own thing. That’s great that your team is back on top with us a few days to go. I have no doubt you will pull it off!
Nope, we were trailing by 37 miles, not leading. As of this morning we were trailing by 89 miles so who knows… The other team seems to answer any miles we log and they’re a ten-person team and we only have eight people on our team.
Ooh, so today is the last day of the challenge? I’m picturing you all pedaling away furiously all day. You’ll have to give us the results in the Weekly Rundown on Sunday!
I’m a little disappointed that you aren’t becoming a Highland cattle farmer (imagine the amazing photos for your blog!) But- also glad that a family member bought the farm. I’m sure it was hard to let it go, and that made it a little easier.
Happy cycling!!!
Yes, today is the final day of this two-month challenge and I’m so happy! I’m reading and responding to your comment as I pedal away! I’m at mile 44.7 and was just texting with my husband who is taking a break while out on his ride with a teammate. He just informed me that he’s doing a metric century (his third in two weeks) so I just might stay on until I reach 62.2 miles as well! And you bet I’ll let everyone know the results of our efforts in the Weekly RunDown.
Oh my gosh, could you imagine the fun pictures I could post of Highland cows on my blog? I could have turned the house into an Airbnb and renamed my blog something like, “Adventures with Deb’s Highland Cows.” And chickens and goats – I’d have to add them to the mix! Now I want to go stay at an Airbnb that has all three of those animals. Maybe next spring break with the fam?
That’s great that your team is closing in on first place! Best of luck!
Congrats on getting the farm sold – I’m sure that was quite an undertaking to get the property ready to sell. And, even better that a family member purchased it.
I’m having lots of issues with WordPress lately including the one you mentioned. My original web support person has closed up shop and I’ve been meaning to find someone new to help fix all my coding issues.
Thanks, Michelle!
I don’t want to say that I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one having WordPress issues, but you know what I mean. It’s good to know that it’s not just operator error on my part.
Seems like a good bike combo you have there! Sometimes I wish we still had a “normal” indoor bike for just logging some km but I enjoy Zwift, so it’s ok, and I can always choose whatever route and decide to just go a certain distance anyway.
With WordPress, which editor are you using? In the block editor there’s the handy spacer block but if it’s a consistent problem every time, I would add an extra padding under images either directly in the theme or using additional CSS in settings. If you’re unfamiliar with it, I’m happy to help! One of my business plans is WordPress support. 🙂
Yes, I’m lucky to have both indoor cycling options! It’s great that you enjoy your Zwift bike and that you can do non-programmed rides on it, too.
Regarding the technical issues you mentioned, some of what you’re describing is a bit over my head, so I may just reach out to you for help! I do enjoy trying to figure things out on my own first, though, so we’ll see. 😉
Feel free to e-mail me if you need to!
Great job logging all those biking miles! It’s great you have two options (actually several, since you have outdoor bikes as well) for keeping the variety in-check.
Thanks, Kim! And yes, I realize how fortunate I am with so many cycling options.
I would love a farm in theory, but it’s sooo much work. It would be tough and I’m not sure I would love it forever.
I haven’t experienced the formatting issues with WP, or at least not yet. There’s still time LOL!
Yes, a farm, especially a dairy farm which my dad and mom owned requires a tremendous amount of work (I know from experience and how hard my dad worked).
Glad WordPress is behaving for you!
I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this but I love your blog’s header image! :]
I’ve been dealing with the same issue w ith WordPress. I thought I was just messing something up somehow. Not sure if there was a weird new update? :/
That photo of the highland cows is priceless! <3 They're so adorable! I have super fond memories of the couple years I spent living on a farm in medical school, but agree — it is so much work!
Thanks, Farrah! Guess what? I used AI (Gemini) to design my blog header. 🙂
You’re the second person that has mentioned that they, too, are having WordPress issues. WordPress must have done some sort of update that has a bug in it. I hope the fix it soon!
How cool that you lived on a farm during medical school. Were you expected to help work the farm, and if so, how did you manage that with med school? That’s a lot to juggle!
Oh, so close on the cycling miles — you did MORE than your part!
I’m still using the WordPress plugin that lets you blog the “old” way and don’t have issues with my photo spacing (that I can tell) — except the gallery option didn’t work today.
Those cookies are so cute!
Thanks, Coco!
I’m still using the old WordPress format as well. Michelle and Farrah mentioned in the comments that they’re having the same photo spacing issues that I am (they didn’t mention if they’re using the new format or stuck with the old). Who knows what’s going on!
Interesting that you can actually work/blog on one of your bikes! I’ve never even thought of doing that!
Interesting animals… well we do have highland cows here, we have alpacas and wild horses. Maybe the most interesting was just today when I saw several tiny frogs?
If we were having coffee I would tell you I’m actually heading to the Scottish highlands this summer! And I can’t wait!
Have fun in the Scottish Highlands! Do you plan to do any hiking?
Tiny frogs? I bet they were cute!
