When a Competitive Spirit Goes into Overdrive
As I mentioned back in early April, our Dawn Patrol team joined the Great American Ride again this year. It’s a fantastic virtual event where teams compete to cross 3,703 miles across the USA from Washington state to Washington, DC. Once teams reach DC, the competition keeps going as we log additional miles on the return route back across the country.
Last year, our team was the 12th group to reach DC, but we went on to win the entire competition with the most overall miles. I ended up leading our team with 1,859 miles, finishing 3rd place overall and 2nd place female in the entire event as part of my quest to hit 6,000 cycling miles for the year.
Heading into this year, I explicitly declared that my goals for 2026 were different. I wanted to put a heavier emphasis on walking, had no specific distance goals for cycling, and swore I wouldn’t go into overdrive logging miles for the challenge.
Well, plans change!
On May 4th, we became the 6th team to cross the USA, which is incredibly impressive considering we are an 8-person team competing against groups of 10 and 12. As we started climbing the leaderboard and closing in on 1st place for total miles, my competitive spirit officially took over. Suddenly, I found myself jumping back on the bike!
With the competition ending on June 5th, my new plan is to log as many miles as I possibly can between now and then and have set a goal for 50 miles per day. Yes, I’m talking about riding those exact “junk miles” I swore off when the event began!
You can read all about last year’s victory in my 2025 Great American Ride Recap.

Unfortunately, the rainy forecast precluded the traditional holiday weekend outdoor bike ride with my friend Betsy. Desperate to get my legs moving anyway, I hopped on the bike for an indoor spin session instead.
With that out of the way, I spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon cooking using my mom’s classic recipes for homemade potato salad, baked beans, and strawberry shortcake. Whether I’m cooking comfort food for a casual summer barbecue or a massive holiday spread for Thanksgiving or Christmas, I absolutely love making larger portions so we can stretch the meals out over a couple of days with friends and family.
Later in the day, the entertaining officially began! We hosted Betsy and her husband who live just a few houses up the street—the same generous friends whose place in Naples, Florida, we’ve been lucky enough to visit the last couple of winters. Despite the rained-out ride, we had a fantastic time catching up, laughing, and enjoying great food together.

After a busy morning of workouts, it was time to fire up the grill again. Even though we had leftovers galore from the day before, we cooked up a fresh round of burgers and brats for a wonderful family gathering.
As we enjoyed the afternoon together, we took time to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday. We remembered why we celebrate Memorial Day and honored the ultimate sacrifice made by our service men and women for the many freedoms our country enjoys today.

With only two weeks left in the Great American Ride, I found myself suddenly motivated. Dawn Patrol is sitting in an impressive second place overall, but despite my earlier declarations that I didn’t really care about my individual stats, I realized I really didn’t want to finish in last place within our own team! With that competitive spark lit, I set out determined to log a longer ride, even if it had to be inside.
Unfortunately, my timing was off and a contractor showed up at the house before I could finish, forcing me to break my planned 50-mile ride into two separate segments. Later in the day, I wrapped things up with a walk on my treadmill—once again feeling incredibly grateful for indoor workout options on such a humid, rainy day!

Stretching: Peloton 15-Minute Stretching for Longevity with Adrian Williams
I was up early at 4:45 AM to fit in my own strength training session before seeing clients. As it turned out, two of my clients ended up canceling, leaving me with some newfound time. I immediately hopped on my spin bike to pound out some early morning miles for the Great American Ride—Dawn Patrol is still holding strong in second place overall, and we are working hard to move into first!
Later in the day, after wrapping up with my final client at the 55+ community, I headed upstairs to get some steps in on their indoor track. I’m glad I got the movement in, but I have to admit—cruising around that indoor track is almost as boring as walking on a treadmill!
Thursday

• Weather: 77° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
It’s always fun to work out virtually with Kim, but I was particularly grateful for her company on Thursday. She kept me motivated for about 22 of my 50 miles as I slogged out even more distance for the Great American Ride!
The rest of the day was pretty chill. I tackled a few chores around the house and spent some relaxing time sitting out on the deck with Pablo. By mid-afternoon, though, the weather was just far too beautiful to stay put, so I laced up my shoes and headed out for a short, but delightfully relaxing walk.
Friday
Cycling: 50 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 15.7 MPH
• Surface: N/A

Stretching: Peloton 5-Minute Post-Ride Stretch with Hannah Frankson
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
I decided to completely mix things up and hopped on my spin bike before starting my morning strength training session. Who am I?! I almost always lift weights first thing in the morning, so this was a major departure from my normal routine.
Everything felt fine initially, but the real test came a couple of hours later when I started teaching my balance and stretching class. The moment I stood up, I realized just how heavy my legs felt from that double morning workout! Fortunately, my legs rallied, and once we finished the warm-up, they loosened right up and felt fine.
Once I got back home, I decided to give myself some grace. I skipped the big gardening project I had planned for the afternoon—and honestly, the rest of my yard work just might have to wait until after the Great American Ride is officially over!
Saturday
Cycling: 50.4 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.4 MPH
• Surface: N/A

• Elevation gain: 84 feet
• Start time: 12:55 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 70°, breezy, and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Stretching: Peloton 10-Minute Lower Body Stretch with Logan Aldridge
At this point, I’m beginning to sound like a broken record! I was up early at 4:30 AM to log 50 more miles on the bike before a busy day of hosting. We had the family over for a brunch celebrating our son and daughter-in-law’s return from their epic hike on the Scottish Highlands Trail. They just flew home yesterday, and Pablo was so absolutely thrilled to see them that his entire butt was wiggling!
During my morning spin, I watched coverage of UNBOUND, the world’s premier gravel racing event which has five distances from which to choose: 300-miler, 200-miler (the marquee event), 100-miler, 50-miler, and 25-miler. Watching those riders must have given me a serious adrenaline rush, because I noticed a significant spike in my overall speed—apparently, I thought I was right there in Emporia, Kansas, racing alongside them! The coolest part about watching the event is the memories it brings back. My husband and I actually rode the 25-mile UNBOUND route a few years ago during one of our cross-country road trips (though definitely not at race pace!). You can check out that adventure here: Cruising Along the 25-Mile Emporia, Kansas UNBOUND Course.
After the kids headed home, I laced up my shoes and went for an outdoor walk. It was simply far too beautiful of a day to not spend some quality time outside soaking up the sunshine. And the best part? My legs felt relatively fresh, proving that I’m pacing myself pretty well while riding so many miles!
Once home, I enjoyed a very well-deserved chill afternoon of watching UNBOUND before going to 5:30 PM mass.
Garmin Badges Earned
Four Garmin badges made their way to me this week…
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Have you ever swore off a specific goal only to change gears and suddenly go after it? ~ umm… 😉
- • When the weather forces you inside, what are your go-to workouts? ~ I’m lucky to have a gym in my basement and while I regularly use my spin bikes, I’ll begrudgingly use my treadmill when necessary.
- • Which workout did you enjoy most this past week? ~ I actually enjoyed my 50-mile indoor spins, partly because of the discipline it takes and the satisfaction of completing each ride.
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Haha, Debbie!! So much for NOT chasing cycling miles this year! Your competitive side clearly had other ideas!
But finishing 6th to DC with only 8 riders is very impressive!! And who knows, maybe this year you’ll move up from 2nd female to 1st.
You don’t have a mileage goal this year, but how many miles have you logged so far in 2026? Are you roughly where you were at this point last year, or quite a bit behind?
I’m at 1,415 total miles so far this year and last year I rode 1,859 just in the two months of the Great American Ride. As soon as I log my miles this coming Friday, it will be back to riding for the fun of it and putting my emphasis back on walking (not that I’m not having fun right now). I’m currently in 46th place overall and 13th female. After what in hindsight feels like slacking off for the first six weeks, it’s not about me right now, it’s all about helping the team!
Wow Debbie! Your achievement in the Great American Ride is impressive! Did that motivate you to pursue 6000 miles this year? Or was that the goal before you placed 2d female?
To answer your questions, if forced inside, I’ll use the treadmill. I’ve made peace with it, and the work I did on it this winter proved its value to me. It’s really great to be running so strongly at 63! Idk if I had a favorite workout this week–I’d probably say this whole week was my favorite so far this year.
I finished 2nd female last year – this year I’m sitting in 46th place overall and 13th female. And no, I have zero desire to chase miles after this event is over this coming Friday.
That’s awesome that your whole week was so great that you’d label it as your favorite of all year!
Sometimes that competitive spirit just takes over whether we like it or not! I have no doubt you will hit your goal this week! If you have not Hannah’s 7 days of stretching program (10 min a day) check it out. Would be great after your rides. I jumped back into this week and it feels great
Awesome, thanks for the tip, Deborah! So far you’re batting 1,000 with Peloton tips! 🙂
Wow – so much for not being competitive? I love all those badges! I always forget about signing up for Garmin badges– I need to do that more! they’re so much fun! Way to go in the Great American Ride!!
Thanks, Melissa! I am extremely competitive and have been all of my life, but I was really trying to rein it in with this event. Obviously, I let it get the best of me. LOL
I do enjoy collecting Garmin badges. At first I didn’t think they meant much, but have come to the realization that they really do motivate me.
Challenges are fun! You obviously enjoy them, so why not go for it. I could see myself getting into something like this. And, your legs feel good so the extra miles are obviously not detrimental!
Glad you’re having such nice weather.
Are Pablo and his humans still there? You’re going to miss him!!!
Agreed, and I’m definitely going for it!
Pablo and his humans left mid-day on Saturday. And yes, we miss him/them so much!
Amazing! I wouldn’t know ANYTHING about “taking it easy” and then going all in to a challenge. Nope. Not me!
I love Pablo. He’s so freaking cute.
I actually loved my run on Thursday. I don’t often say that but after a sluggish, sloggish, humid, hot week, Thursday was really, really good. I needed it.
It’s great that you had such a great run on Thursday! Aren’t those the best?
I’m not sure which I think is cuter: shaggy Pablo or freshly trimmed Pablo. 🙂
I’m pretty sure I change my goals… hence too many races.
When the weather is bad I go to the gym and walk in the mall. (I’ve walked 10 miles there.)
My favorite was both of my races (10 miler and 5k) although neither had nice weather.
Good luck to you and your team Hope you win it!!
I think it’s great that you run so many races. You obviously enjoy them so I’d say keep it up!
And thanks, I can’t wait for Friday so the pressure to ride so much will be off. 😉
You are really cranking out those miles on the bike! Great job keeping pace with your other workouts as well…sounds like your legs are holding up well 😉
Thanks, Kim! And thanks for keeping me company during some of those miles. 🙂
So my 101 miles of cycling this week really doesn’t sound very impressive now. LOL!! When I saw those 50 milers (INDOORS??) logged in Strava I was SUPER impressed. I can’t imagine spending that much time on an indoor bike. You are a beast! Even more impressive that your legs are still feeling good. Way to go!
Thanks, Lisa, and don’t sell yourself short, every one of your cycling miles is impressive.
I can’t believe how many miles you rode this week! That’s amazing! I don’t think they are junk miles when they have such a big purpose!
I’d take a tread over an indoor track, I think.
Thanks, Coco, and I like the reminder that the miles all serve a purpose and I shouldn’t refer to them as junk miles.
Can totally see the butt wiggle. Glad Pablo was so happy
Badges are fiun, we’re all just kids I’m recently back in the Garmin verse and having some fun with them
Congratulations on the massive mileage!
Thanks, Cari! And enjoy collecting those Garmin badges!
What a good week! I love that you got into the competitive mode!! Way to go! I could see myself do something like that but I’d probably do it with walking distances because cycling is way too boring and repetitive to me. But having said that, I can go into a Zwift ride saying “I’ll just keep at my own pace” but then there’s a prompted sprint and that competitive spirit hits me! Those sprints are part of why Zwift helps keep up my (still quite poor) interest in cycling.
My favourite workout by far was my 55 kg squats on Friday, but also the entire workout on Monday when I felt strong and energetic with everything, and even felt good enough with the renegade rows.
Thanks, Susanne! Glad you enjoy your Zwift workouts once you get going. Often the hardest part is changing into our workout clothes and “hitting start.”
Don’t you just love those workouts when everything feels great like during your Monday strength session?
