Join me by pulling up a chair and pouring yourself a cup of coffee. As always, though, I’m sticking to water since I don’t care for coffee or tea. Let’s take a break and try to talk about more than just fitness-related topics. Sound like a plan? I’ll kick us off…
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
March was a solid month for training! Staying home for spring break allowed me to keep up with my regular routine, though I did swap a few neighborhood walks for some local hikes. I also got in some stealth workouts during my spring cleanup sessions in the yard—nothing beats fresh air and hard work! Just a quick note on my stats: I’m no longer counting my Pilates core work (about four sessions per week) on my monthly poster, but my longer strength sessions are definitely still in the mix.

As I slowly transition toward retirement, I’ve reached a significant milestone: I recently resigned from teaching my twice-monthly fitness orientation class (I still teach a weekly balance and stretching class). I’ve led this two-hour session at the 55+ gym for eight years, and while it’s a big change, it’s a natural next step in my journey.
On the personal training side, I haven’t accepted any new clients in over a year. My plan is to gradually reduce my hours through attrition; however, since some of my clients have been training with me for nearly 20 years, I suspect that process might take a little while. It is a privilege to have such long-standing relationships as I begin to wind down my professional schedule.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
Earlier this week I was ambushed during my walk by a ferocious predator… a teeny, tiny, white yappy dog. My neighbor’s two little pups are famous for their vocal opinions, but this time, one actually managed to jerk the leash right out of her hand when he saw me. Fearing the little guy might bolt into traffic, I reached down to grab his leash. Big mistake. As I reached down, he lunged, and his tooth caught my arm—leaving me with a battle wound and a bit of a bloody mess (okay a couple drops of blood). Had I just kept walking, I’d be most like be unscathed (unless he’d nipped my heel), but apparently, my good Samaritan instincts outweighed my common sense. Once my neighbor regained control and assured me he was up to date on his rabies shots, I limped home (not really, but it’s fun being dramatic). All’s well that ends well, even if I was technically defeated by a seven-pound furball!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
In my recent Weekly RunDown, I hinted that I had branched out into a genre far removed from my usual historical novels. My husband recently finished Project Hail Mary and was dying for me to see the movie with him, but I wasn’t the least bit interested. Science fiction has never been my thing, and I have a genuine (and long-story-worthy) terror of UFOs—excuse me, UAPs. However, after catching a brief review of the upcoming film, I decided to give the book a try. Guess what? I couldn’t put it down!
Here’s my rather eclectic list of books read in March, which includes historical fiction, a murder mystery, science fiction, and an autobiographical business memoir…
- • Carnegie’s Maid by Marie Benedict
- • A Sharp Solitude: A Novel of Suspense by Christine Carbo
- • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
- • Leave it Better than You Found It by Bruce Nordstrom

With today being Good Friday, my heart is turning toward the deep significance of this season. As I prepare for Easter, I’m also thinking of my friends celebrating Passover. Both holidays serve as such important reminders of perseverance and the promise of a brighter future. For me, this weekend is a time to attend church, celebrate with family, and find renewal in a faith that sustains me through every mile of life. Wishing you a happy and hope-filled Easter or Passover.
- Questions:
- • Have you ever picked up a book or tried a hobby in a genre you usually avoid, only to find yourself completely hooked? Tell me about it!
- • My attempt to help a neighbor ended with a battle wound from a tiny pup. Have you ever had a ‘no good deed goes unpunished’ moment while out on a run or walk?
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.

Stepping away from something you’ve led for eight years is a big shift!
I like how you’re handling the transition though – a steady taper sounds like a great idea.
Clients sticking with you for 20 years says everything about the kind of coach you are, Debbie! Something tells me you will have them for many more years, ha!
I bet you’re right with a couple of those clients! 😉
I like your approach to retirement — sounds like a soft landing. I haven’t made any plans yet, but I am starting to consider what it would look like.
Happy Easter!
“Soft landing,” I like the sound of that!
Happy Easter to you as well, Coco!
It is definitely a testament to you training skills that you have so many long term clients.. Sounds like you have a workable slowdown to retirement in place. Since you will have more time, lets plan a pool hangout this summer
Thanks, Deborah, that sounds like a fun plan!
How amazing to have such long-term clients! I like your approach to winding down. I took a pause from work following my hip surgery and have yet to go back…not quite ready to retire yet but no desire to work FT any more.
I don’t blame you for not wanting to work full time again. I haven’t since well before Covid.
Yay for local hikes! I was going to go to Yosemite this weekend but found out I’m scheduled to work, so I’m going to try to squeeze in a nearby hike with a friend instead.
That’s awesome to have such long-term clients! :] I’m going on year 7 at my current job and it’s been really cool to have patients who have been with me since I started there!
I’m sorry that you got attacked, but I’m glad you’re ok! The small ones always seem to have such big personalities! (Meanwhile, my dog is almost 60lb and quails/hides behind me at the sight of a plastic bag blowing by…)
I loved Project Hail Mary! I usually don’t read it but the book and movie were great! <3
Wow, you’ve been out of medical school and practicing for seven years already? That’s crazy – I had no idea it had been that long!
I can’t wait to see the movie now that I’ve finished the book!
All the very best as you transition toward retirement! I really did not want to read the Hunger Games books at all but I was on a long flight, could not put them down and the rest is history. Sorry about the nip but I’m glad you caught that little devil before he ran into traffic.
Thanks, Marcia! Oh wow, now I wonder if I should read that series. I should finish the pile on my nightstand first! 😉
That’s crazy such a tiny dog could have such attitude, and heave such a mark. I’m always paranoid of encountering dogs, regardless of size.
I guess he showed me that he wasn’t all bark and no bite!
ouch on the dog bite!!
Congrats on your imminent retirement.
I still work with no end in sight.
Great month of cycling… you’ll have even more time now and for travel.
I’m no a sci fi reader either but I’m tempted to read the book and see the movie.
I wouldn’t say retirement is imminent, but I’m headed in the right direction!
I surprised myself by loving Project Hail Mary. I’ll be interested in hearing what you think, especially since that’s outside your normal genre.
I read Project Hail Mary- it’s good! I’ve heard the movie is really good too, but I probably won’t see it.
Yikes! Attacked by a tiny dog! Ha- I’m sure he was just greeting you exuberantly. Glad you’re okay.
It sounds like you’ll have to wait a long time to be fully retired… but it’s nice you have such loyal clients!
I think Despicable Me 2 was the last movie I saw in a theater so obviously we don’t go to see movies often. My husband really wants to see this movie so I think we’ll go see it this coming week.
Yeah, I was kind of surprised that the little dog actually came toward me. I assumed he was “all bark and no bite.”
