Settling in With Peloton Classes

Six weeks in and I’ve been having fun trying several different types of classes with Peloton. I’m trying to take classes from a wide variety of instructors to see whose classes I enjoy most. I especially appreciated being able to continue my stretching classes while at the farm by using the app on my phone.

Overview of the Week

Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

Sunday

Cycling: 30 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.1 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:52 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° in the basement, 36° (feels like 29°) and cloudy outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

Walking: 4.1 miles
• Average pace: 15:35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 195 feet
• Start time: 1:34 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 35° (feels like 23°) and cloudy
• What I wore: tights, s/s shirt, sweatshirt, down coat, knit hat, and heated gloves

Stretching: Peloton Hannah Corbin 10-Minute Stretch

I stayed on my spin bike much longer than planned, but sometimes the time just seems to fly by and I ride longer than intended. Later, I got outside for a walk; the wind was brisk and it was dreary out, but I really enjoyed myself.

Monday

Strength training: 1 hour of total body

Walking: 2.16 miles
• Average pace: 15:35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 177 feet
• Start time: 4:55 PM
• Location: gravel road at the farm
• Weather: 27° (feels like 14°) and clear
• What I wore: tights, s/s shirt, fleece jacket, down coat, knit hat, and heated gloves

Stretching: Peloton Hannah Corbin 10-Minute Stretch

After lifting weights, taking a stretch class, and training one virtual client, my husband and I drove to the farm, stopping to see family for lunch along the way. We arrived around 4 PM and once we’d unpacked the car we headed out for a walk to stretch our legs after sitting so much of the day.

Tuesday

Stretching: Peloton Joslyn Thompson Rule 10-minute Lower Body Stretch

Cycling: 7.86 miles (Peloton Cody Rigsby 30-Minute Low Impact Ride)
• Bike: Peloton Bike+
• Average speed: 15.2 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:48 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° in the basement, 21° and clear outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

Stretching: Peloton Cody Rigsby 5-Minute Post-Ride Stretch

Just before bedtime Monday night, I noticed that NOAA had issued a severe geomagnetic storm warning and that the Northern Lights might be visible as far south as Alabama, most likely between midnight and sunrise. The sky was clear at the farm where there’s very little light pollution and I was more than giddy when I went to bed and even turned in before the NCAA national championship game was over.

I got up at 3 AM, 4:30 AM, and 6 AM to take pictures of the Northern Lights – there was no way I was going to miss them! The temperature was 12° (feels like 4°) overnight while we were out. I ducked in and out, but Bill stood out there for almost 2 hours from 5-7 AM!

After training a virtual client at 6:30 AM I did a stretch class to work out a knot in my right glute. Later in the afternoon, we drove home from the farm. We were exhausted, but both found the energy to get in some cardio work in the basement before collapsing in bed.

Wednesday

Strength training: 1 hour of total body

Cycling: 10.4 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 15.2 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 351 feet
• Start time: 3:20 PM
• Location: W&OD Trail in Ashburn
• Weather: 40° (feels like 23°) and partly cloudy
• What I wore: fleece lined bike pants, l/s jersey, down coat, ear flat hat, and mittens over gloves with hand warmers between

Stretching: Peloton Ben Alldis 5-Minute Post-Ride Stretch

This 10-mile ride was tougher than expected. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the 29-mph wind gusts or the 23° wind chill that caused the struggle—it was my dead Di2 battery.

Even though it was at 50% last week, I plugged it in so my husband and I could stay on the same charging schedule (his was down to 10% on last week’s ride and he’d charged it once we got home). The charging light came on, so I assumed it was fine. Clearly, it didn’t charge and somehow sucked the charge out, leaving me unable to shift gears the entire way.

Thursday

Walking: 5.14 miles
• Average pace: 15:41 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 173 feet
• Start time: 6:05 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 33° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: tights, sleeveless base layer, l/s shirt, puffer coat, knit hat, and heated gloves

Peloton strength: Emma Lovewell 10-minute core strength

With plummeting temps and snow in the forecast for the weekend, I wanted to get outside for a walk and was pleased that it was a very comfortable 33° when I ventured outside with my favorite early morning sidekick Kim who was virtually joining me from her spin bike in Iowa.

Friday

Strength training: 1 hour of total body

Peloton strength: Emma Lovewell 5-minute core strength

Balance and stretching: 45 minutes

Walking: 4.09 miles
• Average pace: 15:33 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 175 feet
• Start time: 3:38 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 43° (feels like 29°) and partly cloudy, dropping to 39° (feels like 25°)
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, hoodie, puffer coat, and mittens over gloves

I made time for one more walk before the super cold air hit, and even though my weather app said the feels like temperature was 29° when I headed out, I didn’t believe it and didn’t wear a hat. Shockingly, I never felt cold and had a great walk.

Saturday

Cycling: 8.4 miles (Peloton Ally Love 30-Minute Classic Rock Ride)
• Bike: Peloton Bike+
• Average speed: 16.5 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:09 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° in the basement, 8° (feels like -2°) and cloudy outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

Stretching: Peloton Adrian Williams 15-Minutes Full Body Stretch

With family time planned for the rest of the day, my husband and I got up early to fit in our workouts. He rode our old spin bike while I did my classes using the Peloton (today we’ll switch bikes).

The only time I got outside was to go to church. I arrived 15 minutes early assuming it would be very crowded with snow arriving a few hours later, and even 15 minutes early, the church was almost full. By the time church started the church was overflowing with standing room only (it was more crowded than the incredibly popular 4:30 Christmas Eve mass). The priest started mass by saying, “Merry Christmas!” HaHa!
