Join me by pulling up a chair and pouring yourself a cup of coffee. Even though I don’t care for coffee or tea, there is a warm beverage I enjoy so I’m treating myself to a Starbucks peppermint hot chocolate. Let’s take a break and talk about more than just fitness related topics. Sound like a plan? I’ll kick us off…
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
November was a strong month for my workouts, but I’m planning a significant shift in my fitness goals for 2026, starting with a major change in my approach to cycling: no distance goal.
I’ve learned that I’m far too obsessive and competitive with myself, and I feel like chasing arbitrary mileage targets has led to a lot of what I call “junk miles” in 2025. By removing the distance pressure, I hope to focus more on quality workouts.
Despite this planned shift, you’ll still find me on the bike over the next couple of weeks as I focus on pounding out those final 67 miles to officially hit my 6,000-mile goal for the year!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
Decorating for Christmas has been very special this year as I incorporated some of my mother’s cherished items into my own decor. Mom absolutely loved Christmas—I always told her she was the original Martha Stewart! Displaying her various decorations brought back wonderful memories of seeing them in my parents’ home over the years.
In the process of decorating and making space for her keepsakes, I also took the time to purge a lot of my own things. I now have a car backseat full of donations ready to be dropped off, marking a meaningful refresh for the holiday season.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
In what used to be a quick two or three-day job, the process took me far longer than expected this time. I found myself needing frequent breaks, a clear sign that I’m not getting any younger!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
With the holidays and entertaining season upon us, let’s talk about the ultimate party centerpiece: the grazing board. Whether you call them appetizers, antipasto platters (as I’ve often done), or the trendy charcuterie board, these elaborate displays make a fantastic splash at any gathering.
I recently attended a charcuterie creation class with a friend at a nearby wine shop, and it was eye-opening. We focused on techniques to enhance visual appeal, specifically by using a wide variety of colors and textures.
I also learned the importance of creating height—something I had never done before—by utilizing small ramekins to hold items like long breadsticks or vegetables cut lengthwise. This technique adds essential depth and dimension to the overall presentation, transforming a flat platter into a dramatic focal point.
Here are four of my favorite antipasto platters I’ve created over the last few years. You’ll notice I use pewter platters rather than the ubiquitous wooden boards, simply because I had these pieces long before the current trend! The little blue bowls, however, were a more recent purchase, acquired about two years ago, to help organize ingredients.
My most recent creation, which I prepared for Thanksgiving after taking the class, allowed me to put these new principles into practice. For this gathering, I also displayed deviled eggs and olives in a separate dish, similar to the one shown in the top right of the collage of my older platters.
The class prompted me to consider the difference between the antipasto platters I’ve made for years versus the popular charcuterie boards. While their culinary origins are quite distinct (antipasto being Italian, often vegetable-heavy; charcuterie being French, focusing on cured meats), I discovered that in modern entertaining, the concepts often overlap, blending the best elements of both traditions.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that…..
I got a clean bill of health from my urologist this week following a kidney function test from a couple of weeks ago. Needless to say, I am thrilled to have to a healthy right kidney and to have this 9-month-long chapter behind me!
- Questions:
- • If you celebrate Christmas, are you a minimalist or do you go overboard with decorating? ~ I let myself get carried away!
- • Do you like deviled eggs, or are they even a thing where you live? ~ Our family loves deviled eggs and I make them just like my mom did, no recipe, just throw ingredients in until they taste just right.
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

How special to be incorporating your mom’s decorations with your own. My favorite part of decorating is reflecting over special ornaments.
I haven’t started to think of 2026 goals — I guess it’s time!
Yay on the clean bill of health — that’s a great way to be ending the year.
I agree, my favorite part of unboxing my Christmas decor is the fond memories each piece brings.
I would say I’m more on the “overboard” side with Christmas decor! I also have some things from my mom that were in our house growing up, and I love them so much- one of them is a wax nativity scene, where Joseph somehow got a little melted- he has to be propped up against something or he’ll fall over. Joseph has been melted since my childhood, and I also get a chuckle when I put him out (prop him up).
This was really interesting- I guess my boards are more “antipasto” then “charcuterie!” Who knew? I did take your advice to add height when I made mine for Thanksgiving- but I only had celery sticks standing up, I probably should have had something else as well. Christmas goals!
I brought home all of my mom’s little candle snowmen, carolers, Santa, reindeer, etc. The church steeple is melted and bent over much like your Joseph. I donated eight bags of Christmas decorations yesterday that I set aside as I pulled things out and I still went overboard!
That is super sweet that you are using some of your mom’s Christmas decor-what a lovely way to keep her in your thoughts during the holidays. I do love a good charcuterie board myself! I’m such a cheese lover these are always my fave.
I feel you on the goals becoming too much-I happy now setting small goals weekly and doing my best to achieve them. What did you decide about the Peloton bike?
It’s so sweet seeing Mom’s Christmas decorations in our home, and you’re right, it makes me smile every time I glance at something and think of her.
We’re getting the Peloton bike – my husband may have ordered it yesterday.
Your charcuterie/antipasti boards look amazing!! I love this boards – I think I could live off them, bedevilled eggs and all!
Dropping the distance goal is a smart move. Chasing numbers can turn into noise fast, and you’re right, junk miles don’t add much. Quality over quantity will serve you better.
But of course you’re still knocking out those last 67 miles… I’d expect nothing less!
Thanks, Catrina! It was fun making the antipasto platter with my daughter-in-law. I notice you call them bedeviled eggs. I’ve not heard them called that – very cool to learn what things are called in different areas.
I’m looking forward to not chasing a stupid number. LOL
I love love love that your mom’s Christmas treasures are now a valued part of yours. I’ve become more of a minimalist, due to my scaled-down living space. It certainly saves me a LOT of time & stress!
Thanks, Kim, they bring back such wonderful memories. And yes on the saved time and stress!
I hate deviled eggs.
Those charcuterie boards look amazing.
I decorate less and less each year. It’s so time consuming and then you have to put everything away.
I do need to get rid of those items I don’t put out.
Darlene, I donated eight Trader Joes paper shopping bags worth of Christmas decorations I no longer put out (plus two large wreaths) yesterday and it felt so good. I’m hoping they’ll bring a smile to someone else.
We live in “The South,” and deviled eggs are A THING. Like, we made them around Easter time when I was growing up in NJ, but now, they are an absolute staple. And they go fast. People who are like “oh< just one egg for me for breakfast please" are devouring 6 and 7 whole eggs. It's wild. A's girlfriends makes a killer deviled egg, so that's always her holiday job.
I am a little more minimalist. I try to make it fun, but it's a lot to set out, and honestly, the boys don't appreciate the little details so much. I have this huge Xmas village that takes a whole day to set up, but I don't really do it anymore because I"m the only one who really feels the joy.
I love that you are incorporating touches of your mom into your decor. That is so special
Oh yeah, deviled eggs are a thing in the south and no one can eat just one! I know we had them for Easter, and I think Mom or Grandmother also made them for Christmas and summer picnics.
Your Christmas village sounds lovely, but I can understand how long it takes to set it up.
I like the idea of removing pressure and focusing on quality! My goal for 2026 as far as fitness goes = to work on consistency (as per usual, lol). I think I did better this year as compared to last, but I definitely could improve on that!
I need to work on doing a purge of my stuff sometime soon! (I feel like I need to schedule a staycation to get that done, haha.) I love that you’re incorporating some of your mom’s things into your decor! <3
Staying consistent is a great goal, Farrah. I’m looking forward to less time in the saddle in 2026. 😉
