Losing My Mom

My brother and I lost our mom this week. It will take me a while to write a tribute worthy of what she meant to our family and the community…

Overview of the Week

Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

Sunday

Cycling: 22 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 15.8 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 9:26 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65° in the basement, 58° and sunny outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

Walking: 3.07 miles
• Average pace: 15:46 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 153 feet
• Start time: 2:24 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 80° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor

I don’t know why I do this to myself, but once again I waited until it was quite warm outside before heading out for my walk. At least the humidity was comfortably low.

Monday

Strength training: 1 hour of total body

Walking: 3.18 miles
• Average pace: 15:37 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 64 feet
• Start time: 1:31 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 80° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor

Once again the temps had risen by the time I got outside for my walk, but I had a good excuse – morning clients kept me busy. It was another low humidity day which kept me very comfortable while in the shade.

Tuesday

Cycling: 16.3 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.0 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:59 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 66° in the basement, 59° and mostly clear outside
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

Cycling: 10.44 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 15.2 MPH
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 358 feet
• Start time: 10:17 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail local loop
• Weather: 70° and mostly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves

Even though my husband and I had planned a longer ride once it warmed up, I opted to multitask on my spin bike while training a client. Later, our ride got cut short when I received a phone call from my mom’s nurse letting me know that things had taken a big turn overnight and weren’t looking good for Mom. I rushed home to pack to go see Mom, but got a call less that two hours after the initial call that my dear sweet mom had just passed away.

No longer rushing, we decided to leave for the farm early the following morning, giving ourselves time to think about what we’d need to take with us.

Wednesday

Strength training: 1 hour of total body

Drive to the farm

After an absolutely horrible night’s sleep, I was in our basement gym by 4:30 AM. If I couldn’t sleep I decided that I might as well get up and workout before our drive to the farm.

Thursday

Rest day

Friday

Strength training : 30 minutes of core and lower body

Saturday

Drive home from the farm

Rest day

With a nor’easter forecast to hit the east coast on Sunday into Monday and not wanting to drive in the rain, we left the farm late in the afternoon after Mom’s funeral.

Last Week’s Blog Posts

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past weeks, here’s what you missed…

Questions:
  • • What one or two exercises do you do regularly that you feel helps you the most? ~ McKenzie press-ups and crunches – I used to experience back pain sitting in anything other than a very specific type chair with an added lumbar support, but since adding these two exercises into my routine I’m much more comfortable on a wide variety of chairs/sofas.
  • • How’s your weather been recently? ~ We had a beautiful week both at home and in SWVA. Other than rain on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, it was sunny with low humidity. I woke up to 37° at the farm on Friday morning, though.
  • • Which workout did you enjoy most this past week? ~ I had really hoped to go for a walk while at the farm which would have been nice to help me clear my head and enjoy time on the country roads where I grew up. If I’d done that, it would have been my favorite workout. I suppose Monday’s walk was my favorite. I walked and then spoke with my mom when I got home – the last time I got to talk to her.

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
