~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…
It’s time again to join in on the fun and clear my conscience of recent running, biking, fitness, nutrition, and life in general faux pas. I know I’ll feel better when I’m done, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll give you a laugh or two in the process!
I blogfess: I’ve started doing quarterly runfessions because I’m just not clever enough to come up with an entertaining monthly post. One of my local friends who reads my blog once told me that I’m a lot funnier in person than on my blog…
I runfess/bikefess: Since I’ve stopped running, I’d forgotten all about having toe socks and how they helped prevent my toes from rubbing against each other and developing blisters. During our summer road trip one of my toes suddenly started hurting and hurt for the entire trip whenever I wore my hiking and cycling shoes (it was fine in my regular sneakers and casual shoes). Once home, I remembered my toe socks and started wearing them again. Problem solved!
I runfess/bikefess: In my last runfessions post I wrote that I don’t wear underwear under lined running shorts or cycling shorts and asked what my readers do. I got lots of responses and because I know you’ve been on pins and needles waiting for the final tally, it came out pretty evenly split, just like opinions on just about everything else in the world.
- Under running shorts
- • Underwear – 4
- • No underwear – 4
- Under cycling shorts
- • Underwear – 5
- • No underwear – 3
I walkfess: I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but the weather seems to effect the speed on my Garmin. I often walk on our neighborhood street that’s a half-mile circle and I’m always aware of which house I’m in front of when the Garmin beeps each mile. On cloudy days the Garmin beeps out the first mile several houses earlier than on clear days. It was very cloudy this past Wednesday when my Garmin notified me that the first mile was complete about five houses earlier than usual and my average pace was a sub-15.
I thought maybe it just had to do with the cooler weather causing my performance to improve, but the distance is longer on those cloudy days…
There you have it, my most recent fessions; and you can bet that it feels good to get another set off of my chest!
- Questions:
- • Do you ever think that your Garmin is less accurate under different weather conditions? ~ weirdly, yes
- • Have you tried toe socks, and if so, do you like them? ~ yes and yes
- • What are your runfessions?

I’ve never tried toe socks! For whatever reason, I rarely have a problem with blisters. Actually I did hear somewhere that some people are more prone to blisters than others- something to do with the elasticity of the skin on your feet? Anyway, no toe socks for me (yet…)
I’ve never noticed that about my Garmin- but now I’ll be on the lookout for it.
Sometimes I have trouble coming up with runfessions as well! I’ve had to make it “gymfessions” or just regular “confessions” sometimes.
You know, it would make sense that I’d be more prone to blister now than when I was younger. Older people have thinner skin, and with less elasticity.
Oh wow I’d completely forgotten about toe socks until you mentioned them. I wore them for running for a bit but then stopped for who knows why? I never noticed Garmin giving different results based on the weather. I’ll have to pay attention.
I’d forgotten about my toe socks as well until I got home from our trip.
I must have missed your poll, but I am commando in lined shorts. Otherwise it’s all too bunchy!
toe socks are not for me. I don’t often get blisters, but I can’t stand anything in between my toes… I would probably make things worse trying to move my feet in them. I’m so glad they work for you, though!
Nope, you voted and said you didn’t wear underwear under lined running shorts and probably wouldn’t under bike shorts either. 😉
I do have a few socks but they didn’t help and I prefer regular ones. I get blisters when it’s raining or very humid because I have bunions and the socks didn’t make a difference.
I do wear underwear… all the time. No judgment.
Absolutely no judgement, but I do love how everyone is very passionate about their opinions. 🙂
Debbie, your Runfessions always make me smile!
I’ve had those Garmin quirks too, but technically, cloud cover shouldn’t faze GPS at all. What really throws it off are tall buildings or deep tree cover…basically anything that lets Garmin do a little diva act, ha!
And your underwear tally cracked me up! What about your cycling friends? Are they all team “no underwear,” or is it as divided as the running crowd?
Awww, thank you, Catrina. 🙂
If cloud cover did have an affect on Garmin, it would seem that it would slow it down, right? LOL
You’re right, I should poll my cycling friends about wearing underwear under their bike shorts.
huh. I never wear underwear under my bikeshorts… definitely under running shorts though.
I wear toe socks all the time. my husband swears by them and always buys them when they are on sale. I had to tell him to stop since my entire top drawer is *almost* only socks/. no more socks please. but they are great 🙂
I only have one pair of toecsocks, and they have a tendency to get lost amongst all their “boring” siblings. I really should wear them more often (or simply acquire a few more). I’m not doing super long distance running these days, so I really don’t think about them much.
I didn’t wear toe socks way back in the day, but now that my toes cross over each other (eew!) they really help with the rubbing and blister prevention.
